Summary

From the author of the "riveting" ( Chicago Tribune ) The Midwife of Venice , a fresh and sweeping historical novel following a Jewish woman attempting to bring justice to her family on the eve of World War II。 New York City, 1939: At the height of the Great Depression, a time when President Roosevelt is trying to keep America out of World War II, Giddy Brodsky is lucky to have a job as a cigarette girl at a Manhattan jazz club。 Nevertheless, she dreams of establishing a cosmetics business and leaving the poverty-stricken Lower East Side tenements behind。 She has lived there with her family ever since they fled Russia, forced to emigrate after a group of Cossacks burned down their village, and her memories continue to haunt her。 Giddy tries to focus on the future until, during an evening streetcar ride, she thinks she recognizes one of the Cossacks who changed her life forever。 Determined to get answers, she enlists the help of Carter van der Zalm, the Chief Commissioner of Immigration at Ellis Island, who is hunting the same man。 He suspects the Russian is involved in an assassination plot that will destroy American and Soviet relations, and he enlists Giddy to moonlight as a spy for him。 But when she finally tracks down the man they're both seeking, she finds herself in the middle of a shocking political conspiracy that changes everything she once held true。 In the tradition of Lara Prescott's The Secrets We Kept and Kate Quinn's The Rose Code , The Jazz Club Spy is a glittering and gritty look at pre-WWII America, and the personal battle one woman wages between justice and forgiveness。

The author does a good job of capturing 1930s NYC as well as the past in Ukraine。 Typically, her female lead has more moxie than is good for her。 Exploits take unexpected turns as Giddy ups her risk factors。 Good historical fiction read。 Thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for providing this title。 。。。more

If I did not know better, I thought I just read a Mickey Spillane novel where woman are called "broads" and nightclubs are called "joints"。 It is about a Russian Jew immigrant from the Lower East side of Manhattan who meets a gentleman with refined manners and Savile row suits。 What do they have in common? Plenty。 Loved the dialogue and story line。 A "goodread"。 If I did not know better, I thought I just read a Mickey Spillane novel where woman are called "broads" and nightclubs are called "joints"。 It is about a Russian Jew immigrant from the Lower East side of Manhattan who meets a gentleman with refined manners and Savile row suits。 What do they have in common? 3。95 The dominant story line is not about Giddy being a spy。 It’s more about life in New York for Russian Jewish immigrants and her pursuit of a Cossack that caused the deaths and destruction of her early life。 Lots of Jewish terms and financial challenges。 Evenly paced and worth the time。

I really enjoyed this audiobook。 The Jazz Club Spy takes you to LES NY in the 1920’s (with a prologue in a shtetl sun turn of the century Russia)。 The heroine Giddy Brodsky, is working in a NY jazz club, (twenty years after the awful pogrom)。 One night she believes she sees the Cossack who attacked her mother, and caused the death of her baby brother。 She wants to confront him。 All she has to do is track him down…。。 Excellent story and the audiobook is great!

I would have to say that this is probably my favorite ADR of the year。 The story was rich and purposeful。 I didn't know what was going to happen from one moment to the next and the author didn't add more than was needed to be thoroughly impressed and satisfied with the plot, the romance, the history and the setting。 Brilliant minds make up stories like these。 I would have to say that this is probably my favorite ADR of the year。 The story was rich and purposeful。 I didn't know what was going to happen from one moment to the next and the author didn't add more than was needed to be thoroughly impressed and satisfied with the plot, the romance, the history and the setting。 Brilliant minds make up stories like these。 。。。more

A fun read and you can't help but root for the main character, but I found a lot of it, as historical fiction, to be implausible。 I also felt like the storyline wasn't fully developed in some parts and I was interested to know more about the characters。 Still, though, it was engaging and I read straight through it despite some flaws。 If you like your historical fiction on the lighter side as opposed to the meatier side, you will most likely enjoy this book。Thank you to NetGalley for an advance c A fun read and you can't help but root for the main character, but I found a lot of it, as historical fiction, to be implausible。 I also felt like the storyline wasn't fully developed in some parts and I was interested to know more about the characters。 Still, though, it was engaging and I read straight through it despite some flaws。 If you like your historical fiction on the lighter side as opposed to the meatier side, you will most likely enjoy this book。Thank you to NetGalley for an advance copy of this book。 A cute story! 。。。more

3。5 ⭐️It’s been a while since I’ve picked up a historical fiction book, but the premise of The Jazz Club Spy intrigued me。 Set during WWII, this story is primarily located in the United States and brings to alive tenement life in NYC。 There are elements of suspense that held my attention, and Giddy is a very likeable FMC。 Even a reluctant WWII/HF reader would likely find this to be a solid read。
